Thank you, Joseph: No one else is on this yet -- and it's clearly the result of top-level dealmaking.
Cortines dropped a bomb along with his 100 Day Plan, sending out a letter to the parent(s) of every one of LAUSD's 688,000 asking parents -- get this -- to organize to pressure their legislators to pass a budget!
In LAUSD, a huge majority of those parents are represented by Democratic legislators, who have no card to play to break the Republican impasse.
So let me sum up:
* Cortines fires teachers -- and praises Schwartzeneggar for his "flexibility" and "leadership" in resolving the budget crisis.
* Cortines writes every parent in LAUSD and exhorts them to organize and swamp their Democratic legislators, blaming them for the mess.
Cortines is servicing a political deal, helping to starve and drown the beast. Gov. Villaraigosa and Sen. Schwartzeneggar want it this way -- because Broad, Riordan and the GOP action plan call for privatizing public school.
Cortines is a hatchet man and a hack. He's on the board of Scholastic Inc, despite the conflict of interest with his current job.
He's positioning himself for quite a payoff for dismantling LAUSD.
